MTV MARKS HIPHOP’s 50th WITH NEW SERIES, THE MTV EFFECT
(New York, NY) - November 22, 2023 - MTV today announced a new five-part digital series, THE MTV EFFECT, where artists, creatives, and tastemakers past and present show how Hip Hop and MTV together have changed everything. The series, hosted and co-executive produced by Dometi Pongo, will air Wednesday, November 22nd at 4pm ET/PT.
MTV brought Hip Hop into the hearts and homes of audiences all over the world, in a groundbreaking way that only MTV could have done. In honor of Hip Hop History Month, as well as Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary, The MTV Effect celebrates the historic impact of Hip Hop and MTV by digging deep into the archives and getting up close and personal with artists, creatives, and tastemakers, past and present. In the series, written and produced by Sunni Anderson and co-executive produced by Sway, viewers go on a journey to understand the cultural significance of MTV and Hip Hop’s shared story, told in a kinetic, captivating style. In 6-8 minute segments highlighting Hip Hop icons such as XZIBIT, Lola Brooke, MC Lyte and Sway, a combination of interviews and archival footage show how the industry has formed around them.
“These video essays are kind of like our love letter to Hip Hop. It just so happened that MTV was there, front and center for so many of these cultural touchstones. That’s why it was so special for Sway to decide to be a creative partner on this. Telling these stories through the MTV lens underscores how Hip Hop’s impact transcended far beyond the music,” said Pongo.
“MTV News gave birth to most of the things you see that's happening right now and the way people format and do their shows. MTV News’ impact on and contribution to Hip Hop — it’s unmatched, unprecedented, and to this day has not been duplicated,” said Sway.
