Dometi Pongo began taking groups of people of African descent on cultural retreats in Ghana in 2016. The work earned Pongo the “Ambassador Award” from the Chicago Chapter of the Nigerian American Professionals Association and the “Catalyst of Hope Award” from the VLA World Scholars Program.

After six trips, more than 90 travelers of African descent have become connected through a shared life-changing experience. Here’s a glimpse of that experience through the eyes of a 2019 travel group.
